In light of looming price hikes for food, the Social Association Germany (SoVD) has urged the federal government to reduce the VAT promptly. “A reliable, healthy diet must be affordable for everyone and should not depend on one’s wallet” said SoVD board chair Michaela Engelmeier in an interview with the “Rheinische Post” Saturday edition. She emphasized the need for clear political actions that truly ease the consumer burden.
To that end, she cited making staple foods more affordable- for example, by lowering the VAT-as a targeted approach. “What matters most is that this relief actually reaches people” Engelmeier added.
