SoVD Slams Proposed Cut to Free Family Health Coverage

The German Social Association (SoVD) criticized the planned significant restriction of free supplementary insurance coverage for married individuals within the statutory health insurance system. Michaela Engelmeier, the chairperson of the SoVD, told “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that the “near-abolition of the free family insurance is a completely wrong signal”. She emphasized that this coverage primarily supports people with lower incomes and is therefore considered an essential cornerstone of the principle of solidarity. According to the SoVD, such a discontinuation would cause social hardship, hitting these families particularly hard, and an exception for children under seven years of age would not be enough to cushion the blow. Furthermore, she asserted that the federal government must first fulfill its responsibilities by funding the billions in contributions for people receiving basic security benefits using tax revenues. Engelmeier stated that “this is a task for the entire society and therefore cannot be borne solely by those paying contributions to the statutory health insurance”. She urged the ministries representing Warken and Klingbeil to urgently renegotiate the matter.
