Söder Opposes Constitutional Review of AfD Ban Calls It Hysterically Moral

Markus Söder, the Minister-President of Bavaria and chairman of the CSU, has spoken against a constitutional review by the Federal Constitutional Court of a possible ban on the AfD. He urged that the AfD-whose members are increasingly radicalizing to the right instead of moderating-continue to be monitored by the domestic intelligence service (Verfassungsschutz) but cautioned against demanding what he calls a “hysterically moralistic” prohibition.

Söder told the “Mediengruppe Bayern” (Wednesday edition) that he intends to tackle the AfD “by competence”. “The AfD is not fit to govern. Its far‑off economic proposals would be highly detrimental to our country. And worst of all, the AfD remains a Moscow‑loyal faction” he said. “The employment relationships among AfD MPs are beginning to resemble clan structures”.

The German Basic Law states that parties whose aims or the conduct of their followers intend to impair, eliminate, or endanger the liberal democratic constitutional order or the existence of the Federal Republic of Germany are unconstitutional. The question of unconstitutionality is decided by the Federal Constitutional Court.
