Söder Endorses Merz’s Return as Chancellor Candidate

Markus Söder, leader of the CSU, made it clear that he backs a second chancellor bid from Friedrich Merz of the CDU. Speaking to the “Stern”, he said, “Friedrich Merz will, fortunately, remain with us for a long time – both as a person and as Chancellor”. He also affirmed his full support for a potential re‑nomination.

Söder highlighted the strong personal relationship he shares with Merz. “The core team of the CDU, CSU and SPD is working well” noted the Bavarian premier. “My relationship with Friedrich Merz is excellent”. When asked whether he trusted Merz with the forthcoming reform programme, Söder answered, “Absolutely – Merz can handle it”.

At the same time, the CSU leader warned his Union colleagues against a misbalanced approach to the reforms. “The Union must never give the impression that it exists only for the top tens of thousands” Söder said. “We have both economic and social responsibilities”. He emphasized that these responsibilities are complementary, not contradictory.

Merz himself has recently kindled debates over a possible re‑election. In February, he told reporters in Trier that he still intends to pursue a long political career, noting that his father turned 102 in January. CDU General Secretary Linnemann had earlier remarked that Merz possesses “good genes” suggesting the politician could remain active for many years.
