Social Welfare Criticizes Planned Illness Benefit Cuts During Reform Hearings

Prior to a hearing for associations, the German Association of Disabled People (SoVD) expressed strong criticism of the planned healthcare reform, warning specifically about potential cuts to sickness benefit payments. Michaela Engelmeier, the chairwoman of the SoVD, told the “Rheinische Post” (Monday edition) that such a measure is “entirely incomprehensible and socially problematic”. She added that this move is “highly unsolidaristic and will only fuel the debate regarding a multi-class system of care”.

Engelmeier further argued that the draft legislation lacks balance, noting that GKV insured individuals have, in fact, already contributed and endured years of increased contributions. She expressed concern over the plan to make further cuts and raise co-payments for medications. Additionally, she criticized the federal government for not intending to cover the full contributions for individuals receiving basic security benefits. She demanded that the government fulfill its obligation and finance the billions in contributions needed for people in basic security using tax revenues.

The dispute over the healthcare reform had already gained momentum over the previous weekend, involving the Federal Minister for Health, Nina Warken (CDU).
