German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Thursday evening, spokesperson Stefan Kornelius reported. Zelenskyy thanked the German government for the “Winter Aid Package”.
The package includes additional support for Ukraine’s air defence, as well as combined‑heat‑and‑power plants and generators. Its purpose is to help the Ukrainian civilian population “endure the brutal Russian attacks” Kornelius said.
Merz condemned the “continued systematic and brutal destruction of Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure by Russian attacks to the maximum”. Both leaders welcomed ongoing efforts to secure a cease‑fire. The chancellor reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, and both sides remain in close contact on the matter.
