Faced with rising energy prices triggered by the war in Iran, Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania’s Minister‑President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has urged the federal government to present a plan for price stabilization and to quickly refill gas storage facilities.
She highlighted the upcoming Ministers’ Conference on Thursday, stating that she expects the federal government to provide a situation assessment and to propose concrete steps to stabilize the economy and energy costs, “including the rapid refilling of gas storage”.
Schwesig stressed that citizens and the economy can no longer bear additional burdens. She said the conflict in the Middle East primarily threatens the safety of civilians and German residents who are trapped there, but she also expressed concern over the potential impact on energy prices and the broader economy.
The Minister‑President warned that the relief measures already introduced for citizens must not be eroded. In recent months, the government has successfully reduced energy prices and eased commuters’ costs by increasing the commuter allowance. She underscored that these safeguards must be preserved.
