Schulze Warns of Massive Turbulence After Potential AfD Landslide Victory

Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister President, Sven Schulze (CDU), warned about the far-reaching consequences of a potential surge for the AfD during the state election scheduled for September. speaking to the “Rheinische Post” Schulze suggested that if the AfD manages to secure an absolute majority and pushes the SPD out of the state parliament, the consequence will be massive upheaval throughout the region.

Citing current poll numbers, Schulze noted that the CDU currently holds between 25 and 26 percent, the SPD is polling between 6 and 7 percent, and the AfD is tracking between 38 and 41 percent. Regarding the position of Minister President, he stated that he himself is positioned “clearly ahead” even after only 100 days in office. He emphasized that the election outcome concerns how Saxony-Anhalt will be governed over the next five years, and not a directive regarding Berlin. He asserted that he is fighting for every vote on this specific issue.

The CDU politician also highlighted that the AfD is “no longer merely an Eastern issue”. When questioned about whether the election would decide the fate of the federal Chancellor, Schulze stated that federal affairs already make this topic tangibly apparent, adding that he had no need to offer any specific advice regarding Berlin. This was said even with the fact that Saxony-Anhalt will host the Minister-President Conference as the chair starting in October 2026. Finally, he dismissed inquiries concerning the CDU’s proposed incompatibility agreement with the Linke party, stating that he is not currently focusing on such matters.
