Schleswig‑Holstein’s Minister‑President Daniel Günther (CDU) has called for a rapid expansion of renewable energy in light of the war in Iran. He told the “Spiegel” that the Russian invasion of Ukraine had already exposed how vulnerable economies can be when they remain dependent on fossil‑fuel imports in critical sectors.
Günther explained that Schleswig‑Holstein had early on focused on a decisive shift toward renewables. Wind and solar power, he said, not only strengthen climate protection but also increase energy sovereignty and provide greater economic planning security.
He warned that the current situation demonstrates that energy policy is also security policy. “Germany and Europe must act decisively now, reduce structural dependencies on fossil imports, and push the expansion of renewable energies forward” he said. “We must make our energy supply safer and more independent for the long term”.
