Sachsens Interior Minister Calls Leipzig Incident a Spree Drive

According to reports from Saxony’s Interior Minister, Armin Schuster (CDU), and the responsible public prosecutor’s office, the incident that occurred downtown in Leipzig is classified as an “amokfahrt” or vehicular rampage. Officials stated late Monday evening that there were no indications of any other interpretation of the event, nor was there evidence pointing to any additional participants. Minister Schuster confirmed that the detained 33-year-old man was acting as an “amoktäter” (attack perpetrator); investigators noted that he was born, raised, and resides in the region.

The public prosecutor’s office plans to investigate charges of murder in two cases and attempted murder in several others. The violence occurred late on Monday afternoon, around 5 p.m. The perpetrator used an SUV, initially driving from the busy Augustusplatz onto the Grimmaische Straße before speeding toward the Markt square. Initial reports indicated that two lives were lost, and Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung (SPD) subsequently updated the figures, confirming three individuals suffered severe injuries.
