Intense criticism is mounting regarding the planned increase in allowances for members of the Bundestag, scheduled for implementation on July 1st. Vice President Bodo Ramelow (Left Party) publicly rejected the raise, calling it “indecent”-especially at a time when many citizens must budget carefully to make ends meet.
This opposition was strongly echoed by the Taxpayers’ Union. Reiner Holznagel, the organization’s president, asserted that the right signal from the political sphere would be to forgo the pending increase. He demanded an immediate stop to the planned raises.
Holznagel did not limit his criticism to this single instance; he advocated for completely halting the automatic nature of such allowance increases in general. He argued that if this systemic change occurred, every proposed stipend adjustment would be forced into public debate within the Bundestag. According to him, the positive outcome would be greater public accountability from representatives, thereby revitalizing parliamentary democracy.
