Proud LDP Secures Majority in Japan’s House of Representatives Ahead of Parliamentary Victory

During the parliamentary election in Japan, early polling has shown that the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has captured a majority in the House of Representatives. According to surveys conducted by public broadcaster NHK, the LDP-now led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi-will secure the lower‑house majority on its own, a result also echoed by the Kyodo news agency. These assessments come from exit‑polls taken at polling stations, although it is still unclear whether the LDP, together with its coalition partner JIP, will meet the threshold for a two‑thirds majority.

In the 2024 election the former governing alliance of the LDP and Komeito had already lost its overall majority in the lower house. After a defeat in the upper house as well, then‑Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba resigned in September 2025, and Sanae Takaichi was sworn in as Japan’s first female head of government. Her approval ratings are noticeably higher than those of her predecessor, and her decision to call early elections was aimed at securing a clear majority in Parliament.
