Police Shoot Knife Attacker During Arc de Triomphe Ceremony

A man attempted to attack a police officer with a knife during a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris on Friday. French police said the assailant was shot by a security officer and suffered injuries. He was taken to hospital, and an officer was also reported to have been wounded.

The attack occurred while soldiers were being honored at the re‑ignition of the Eternal Flame. French anti‑terror prosecutors have opened an investigation and dispatched investigators to the scene.

President Emmanuel Macron reacted immediately on the social‑media platform X, saying the security forces “neutralised the attack and prevented something worse”. He expressed national solidarity to the injured constable and linked the incident to “Islamic terrorism”.

The Arc de Triomphe, one of Paris’s most iconic monuments, stands at the end of the bustling Avenue des Champs‑Élysées.
