Left-wing parliamentary representative Clara Bünger is urgently advocating for greater involvement from the opposition ahead of the election for members of the Parliamentary Control Committee (PKGr) scheduled for this Thursday.
Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Thursday edition), Bünger stated that effective oversight of intelligence services is impossible without the participation of the critical opposition. She intends for her own candidacy to ensure that the democratic opposition can finally fulfill its constitutional duties.
The politician argued that the government must be properly checked, especially when it operates in secrecy. She criticized the current coalition, noting that in the past year, the PKGr has been formed primarily by the governing factions keeping largely to themselves. “The government is controlling itself. This is untenable in a democracy” Bünger warned.
At the heart of her demand is the need for external democratic oversight. Bünger plans to make an attempt to secure a seat on the committee again this Thursday. The PKGr comprises nine members, with currently vacant seats held by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and The Left party. Bünger noted that the committee operates under strict confidentiality and had previously been unsuccessful in securing election wins for herself several months ago.
