Based on recent figures from the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), only about one quarter of asylum seekers from Iran are granted permission to remain in Germany.
In January and February, BAMF concluded 891 asylum cases involving Iranian nationals, with a total protection rate of 27.6 percent. For the entire previous year the protection rate stood at 22.8 percent, based on 11 626 decisions. The protection rate is calculated by adding the numbers of recognised asylum, granted refugee protection and declared prohibitions of removal, and comparing that total to all asylum decisions.
A spokesman for the Bamf acknowledged that it is currently impossible to determine how developments in Iran and the surrounding region will influence decision‑making: “At the moment we cannot predict whether, and in which direction, the overall situation will evolve”. He added that it is still uncertain whether these dynamics will trigger new movements of refugees into or out of the region.
