The law‑enforcement agency of North Rhein‑Westphalia’s interior ministry has labeled the new Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) youth group “Generation Deutschland North Rhein‑Westphalia” (GD NRW) as a right‑wing extremist suspect.
On Friday the ministry said it had significant evidence that GD NRW is effectively a continuation of the dissolved “Junge Alternative NRW” (JA NRW), which had already been under observation as a suspected extremist organization.
Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) explained that GD NRW follows the agenda of its predecessor and shows a high degree of personnel continuity in its leadership. “Those who think that Generation Deutschland has changed anything are mistaken. Essentially it is the same organization with a new name” he said, noting that the domestic‑security service has found that the group’s personnel structure is a direct carry‑over.
Under the state’s constitution‑protection law, this designation obliges the agency to monitor the group. Consequently, the AfD’s North Rhein‑Westphalia state association will now observe both the former “Flügel” (wing) sub‑structures and Generation Deutschland NRW as cases of suspected extremist activity.
