NRW Labour Minister Laumann Calls for Direct Hiring of Food Delivery Workers

North Rhine‑Westphalia’s labour minister, Karl‑Josef Laumann (CDU), has called for a mandatory direct‑employment rule for food‑delivery workers. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” in its Wednesday edition, he said that competition among companies should not come at the expense of employees-core work should be carried out by staff who are permanently hired. Laumann noted that delivery services for groceries, like other food‑delivery services, often rely on subcontracted couriers to perform the essential task of getting food from restaurant to customer. He therefore supports the move by the Labour and Social Ministers’ Conference to legally anchor a direct‑employment requirement for platform workers in the food‑delivery sector. “With such a mandate, we could eliminate subcontracting in the industry and improve working conditions for these workers” he said.
