Vice President of the Bundestag Omid Nouripour, a member of the Greens, has urged European politicians to take a stronger stand for the imprisoned Iranian Nobel Peace laureate Narges Mohammadi.
He reported to the Funke media group that Mohammadi “has now been beaten in prison and transferred to a secret facility; her family is deeply worried”. Nouripour added that the silence of Europeans on the matter is “deafening”.
According to him, dissidents in Iran receive no protection when they lack attention, a situation the regime exploits. He calls for a clear position from Europe: “Europe must say plainly that Narges Mohammadi must be released immediately” and that this demand must apply to all political prisoners.
The backdrop is Iran’s ongoing repression of opposition activists, which has left the recurring protests without clear leadership. Nouripour mentioned that Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of the Shah, has positioned himself as a figure “who can organise the transition to democracy”. He stresses that the ultimate goal is for Iranians to decide who will assume that role.
