Deputy President of the Bundestag Omid Nouripour (The Greens) emphasized that Germany must take a proactive and central role in securing a peace solution in the Middle East. Speaking to the press group Funke, the Green politician stated that Germany “now needs to establish an independent role within the protective framework of Europe”. He criticized the federal government’s previous “head-in-the-sand” approach, asserting that it was not in Germany’s best interest. Nouripour highlighted Germany’s concrete interests in the neighboring Middle East, ranging from the freedom of shipping to regional stability and energy partnerships.
Nouripour urged that the upcoming two-week ceasefire period be fully utilized, noting that the possibility of achieving peace remains highly uncertain. He pointed out that the Iranian regime views itself as the victor of the recent conflict simply because it remained in power, which gives little indication of a willingness to pursue peace.
Furthermore, the former Green party leader reminded the public that the war has already impacted twenty countries. Regarding Lebanon, Nouripour described the situation as remaining “dramatic”. Consequently, he stressed that any potential peace resolution must prioritize the protection of the civilian population above all else.
