At a secondary school and a residential building in the Canadian province of British Columbia, at least nine people were shot and more than 25 were injured on a Tuesday afternoon local time, the Tumbler Ridge Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced.
When officers arrived at the school they discovered multiple casualties. A person-believed to be the shooter-was found dead with a self‑inflicted wound. In addition to the suspect, six other individuals were discovered deceased on the school grounds. Two victims who suffered severe or life‑threatening injuries were air‑lifted to a hospital, and a third patient died en route. About 25 other people are being treated at a local medical centre for non‑life‑threatening injuries. The remaining students and staff have been evacuated.
During the ongoing investigation, police identified a second scene that appears to be connected to the incident. Two more victims were found dead in a residential unit. Officers are continuing to search additional houses and properties to determine whether more people were injured or otherwise linked to the events. The British Columbia Major Crimes Unit of the RCMP has taken command of the investigation.
