Lower Saxony’s Minister-President, Olaf Lies of the SPD, sharply criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU and the federal government regarding the discussion over measures to combat the energy crisis, calling for a fuel price cap. Speaking to the news portal T-Online, Lies stated, “It is a very unfortunate picture that the Chancellor and the federal government are currently presenting publicly in the debate about relief measures. People at the gas pumps, especially commuters, do not need ideological debates, but solutions”. Previously, public conflict had broken out within the federal government regarding how citizens could be relieved from high energy costs. Economics Minister Katherina Reiche of the CDU had criticized the SPD’s proposals for relieving consumers and businesses in an unusually sharp manner during a press statement. Leading SPD representatives defended against the critique, accusing Reiche of inaction. Lies, the head of the Lower Saxony government, now urged the federal government to move from discussion to action. “For me, a fuel price cap has priority, and I expect this instrument to be seriously examined and implemented very quickly so that we can achieve relief that is visible directly at the gas stations” he added.
