The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Lower Germany has designated the Lower German AfD association as an extremist organization. According to Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD), the party will therefore come under observation. The decision follows the assessment that AfD Lower Germany aligns with right‑wing extremism. Several reasons were cited for the designation, including an ethnocultural nationalist concept that contradicts the liberal‑democratic order, the blanket devaluation of human groups, the denigration of the democratic rule of law, and support for right‑wing extremist groups. The assessment further noted that AfD Lower Germany has not established an active counter‑force against extremist tendencies within the party, but instead supports that orientation. “The evaluation by the protection office is clear: the greatest danger to our society stems from right‑wing extremism, and AfD Lower Germany is unmistakably part of that phenomenon” Behrens said. She also called for a nationwide, unified approach to dealing with extremism.
