SPD Minister Bärbel Bas expressed her hope that the Pension Commission will reach a unanimous consensus during the ongoing internal political struggles surrounding pension reform. Speaking to “Der Spiegel”, she stated that she anticipates the commission will issue a recommendatory resolution that urgently calls for action from politicians. According to Bas, the depth of a unanimous mandate would make it difficult for any political group to simply reject the findings.
When asked if she was granting the commission a blank check, the Minister replied that if the recommendations were indeed unanimous, and if the three parliamentary members serving on the commission were in agreement, she saw no reason not to adopt them.
Historically, the government has incorporated previous changes, such as the “Mother’s Pension” or setting the baseline retirement level at 48 percent, into the coalition agreement to ensure pension stability through 2031. However, the reforms currently at stake pertain to the far future and subsequent generations. “The commission has every opportunity” Bas remarked, noting that the commission is expected to submit its findings no later than the end of June.
Earlier, a statement by CDU leader Friedrich Merz, suggesting that statutory pensions would only serve as a “basic safety net” in the future, drew sharp criticism, including from Bas. However, she later pointed out that in light of increasing importance being placed on private and company-sponsored retirement plans, the ideological rift between her and Merz was not as wide as perceived. Yet, she emphasized her belief that most people have greater trust in the public pension system than in private options.
Bas did not dismiss the possibility that even with a consensus recommendation from the Pension Commission, the SPD could face a significant political test, similar to those encountered during the passing of basic social security. “I have to live with that” she conceded. While the coalition wants to establish a reliable pension structure for the coming years-addressing the foundational long-term issues-Bas concluded by saying, “And it is impossible to implement what others wish for in pure form”.
