Minister Calls To Freeze Deutschlandticket Price Amid Energy Crisis

Amid current energy difficulties, there is a growing push to freeze the price of the Deutschlandticket at €63, foregoing the planned increase scheduled for January 1, 2027. Detlef Neuß, the honorary chairman of the passenger association Pro Bahn, stated to the “Rheinische Post” that the inflation-mandated price raise for the years 2027 and 2028 must be postponed, noting that the necessary funds are significantly less than the €1.6 billion allocated for gas subsidies.

This sentiment is echoed by regional political figures. Oliver Krischer, the transportation minister for North Rhine-Westphalia (Greens), also opposed any price hike, arguing that maintaining a stable fare for the Deutschlandticket sends the right signal during politically difficult times. Krischer warned that public local transport services should not suffer if billions of euros are funneled into fuel discounts and reductions in air travel taxes. He further suggested that offering free travel for children and youth would provide noticeable relief to many families.

Petra Berg, the transportation minister for Saarland (SPD), cautioned about the increasing costs of public transport. She argued that the state should not risk a situation where it subsidizes gasoline while simultaneously being forced to cut back on bus and rail services.
