The SPD parliamentary group leader, Matthias Miersch, has criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) for singling out migrants when addressing violence against women in the Bundestag. In an interview with the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Friday editions), Miersch said the Chancellor’s response was inadequate and regrettable.
“Violence against women must be viewed in a broader context; it should not be narrowed to a single demographic group such as migrants” the SPD politician argued. “Merz misses a deeper problem. Violence against women has no nationality or religion – it is a societal issue that must be tackled as such. The focus should be on protecting victims, regardless of who the perpetrator is”.
Merz had previously responded to parliamentary questions on the topic, lamenting the escalation of violence in both analog and digital arenas and asserting that a large portion of such violence originates from immigrants.
