The anticipated visit of CDU Chancellor Friedrich Merz to the SPD parliamentary group next Tuesday has been framed by SPD Parliamentary Chief Dirk Wiese as following a tradition rooted in the Sauerland region. Writing to the “Rheinische Post”, Wiese stated that the visit embodies the wisdom of an “old social democratic farmer from the Sauerland”: that one must sometimes grapple with disagreements in principle, but always remain solution-oriented-and ultimately, be able to raise a glass together.
Wiese added that Merz’s attendance at the parliamentary session is a “very positive signal for further cooperation” within the coalition. He emphasized the need for the coalition to regroup after difficult weeks and demonstrate its commitment to tackling upcoming challenges both domestically and internationally.
Adding layers of local political history to the narrative, Wiese and Merz both ran in the Hochsauerlandkreis during the 2025 federal elections, with Merz ultimately securing the direct mandate over Wiese. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the CDU parliamentary group informed the “Rheinische Post” that a reciprocal visit from SPD Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil is “currently” not planned.
