Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) remains firm in his criticisms regarding the United States’ approach to the Iran conflict. On Monday, government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius debunked questions from the dpa news agency suggesting that the Chancellor wished to retract any statements following his call with US President Donald Trump.
According to Kornelius, Merz has repeatedly expressed his views on the situation in Iran. He stressed that the core focus of the conflict must be urging Iran to cease its provocations entirely. Furthermore, the country must halt its missile program and submit its nuclear activities to international oversight. It was emphasized that Iran must return to the negotiation table, and that discussions must primarily center on the Strait of Hormuz.
This current stance follows a period of deteriorating relations between the two men. Merz had previously told the public at a school event that the US lacked a proper strategy when it came to the Iran conflict. Trump responded immediately by criticizing the German Chancellor and announcing the withdrawal of several thousand U.S. troops from Germany.
The recent phone conversation on Friday was reportedly an attempt to smooth over the tension. Kornelius confirmed that the atmosphere during the discussion was “very good” adding that the conversation spanned “major issues”. Among the topics discussed were Ukraine and Iran. However, the spokesperson concluded by stating that, due to confidentiality, he could not provide any further specific details.
