Merz Slams SPD Calls for Caution Among Coalition Partners

Friedrich Merz of the CDU recently used markedly sharp language, calling upon his coalition partners to show moderation. Speaking on the ARD broadcast “Caren Miosga” which aired Sunday evening, Merz began by asserting that “there is no left majority in Germany”.

He elaborated on the need for stability within the ruling coalition, stating that there is growing discontent within the CDU. Merz cautioned that he does not possess the authority to dismantle the party, and stressed the essential role the Union must play in the coalition structure. While he does not seek an alternative majority, he warned the SPD against assuming they can unilaterally dictate policy.

Merz also specifically demanded restraint regarding the SPD’s policy plans, focusing particularly on tax matters. Targeting SPD leader Lars Klingbeil, who advocated for higher taxation on high earners, Merz cautioned that “compromises are not a one-way street”. He firmly shut down the idea that the CDU/CSU, or even himself, could accept such tax measures.
