Merz Skips Ukraine Russia Talks in Abu Dhabi Amid Gulf Trip

Friedrich Merz, Germany’s Chancellor, will not make a personal stop at the Ukraine‑Russia peace talks that will take place this Wednesday and Thursday in Abu Dhabi.
The centerpiece of his trip to the Gulf region is other matters, deputy government spokesperson Steffen Meyer told the dts news agency in Berlin on Wednesday. “I therefore don’t expect the Chancellor to join the negotiations in person” Meyer said, adding that Germany is, however, heavily involved “through various channels”.

Meyer welcomed the continuation of the talks-mediated by the United States-between Ukraine and Russia. “We support Ukraine and are accompanying it in this process” he said. “We coordinate closely with them and are also working intensively with European and American partners to bring this war to a true end”. He remains skeptical about how seriously Russia is pursuing a genuine move toward peace.
