Before heading to the United States, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) spoke on the phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr S el S kyj.
During the conversation, the two leaders coordinated their positions in advance of Merz’s meeting with U.S. President Donald J. Trump in Washington, Sel S kyj told reporters on Monday. He also briefed the Chancellor on his recent visit to China and the meetings he held there. According to Sel S kyj, China possesses many instruments that can substantially influence Russia and its willingness to end the war.
In addition, Sel S kyj informed Merz about the current situation on the front and Ukraine’s urgent need for air‑defence missiles. Intelligence reports point to possible Russian attacks, underscoring the importance of making every effort to ensure protection. The call also covered negotiations aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine and how these can be advanced in light of developments in the Middle East.
