German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) will address human‑rights issues during his upcoming trip to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius expressed satisfaction with recent developments, noting that Saudi Arabia appears to be on a reform path with a social and cultural opening. He highlighted progress made for women’s rights, though he also stressed that further improvements are necessary.

Kornelius said the discussions will cover a broad spectrum of topics, and that the chancellor will touch on human rights. He also referenced the annual “Human Rights Dialogue” between the EU and Saudi Arabia.

Merz will travel to the Gulf states from February 4 to 6, with the tour aimed at “strengthening and deepening our partnerships in the Gulf region” according to the official announcement.
