Merk Says US Respects Germany After White House Visit

After his visit to the White House, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) appeared pleased. “The United States respect Germany” he told reporters that afternoon. He said President Trump acknowledged Germany’s financial commitment to military buildup, highlighting the 100‑billion‑euro special fund. Trump also pledged that U.S. troops would remain in Germany-a statement Merz described as “good news”.

Merz reported that he and Trump agreed on the assessment of the Iranian regime, noting that Iran threatens the existence of Israel and the peace and security of the entire region. However, he cautioned that it is unclear whether the plan will succeed and that it carries significant risks.

On trade disputes, the chancellor explained that Washington is aware a ceiling has now been reached for Germany and Europe regarding tariffs. Regarding the war in Ukraine, Merz said he has urged for higher pressure on Moscow.
