Mastercard Open to Partnering on Digital Euro

Michael Miebach, the chief executive of Mastercard, sees the credit‑card company as a potential partner for the digital euro. He told the “Handelsblatt” (Friday edition) that Mastercard is open to such initiatives and already applies its expertise in digital currencies in other markets. As the only German head of a U.S. multinational, Miebach acknowledged that the desire for European payment solutions is understandable. Over recent years the firm has heavily invested in localising its technology and data‑storage infrastructure. Regarding President Donald Trump’s push for a cap on credit‑card interest rates, Miebach responded calmly: “The rate cap will barely affect us. Even if consumer behaviour shifts and fewer customers pay with cards, we handle all types of transactions. As long as merchants use Mastercard, whether it’s a credit or debit card, nothing changes significantly for us”.
