Markus Söder, the head of the CSU, says he wants the promised electricity‑tax cut to be applied to everyone.
In an interview with RTL and ntv, he said, “I am also very much in favour of permanently lowering the electricity tax for everyone in the debates over the coming weeks. That is a clear promise, and it must come through”. He added that he has been fighting hard within the coalition to make it happen.
Söder also criticised the tendency to keep increasing payments for certain social programmes. He argued that “we cannot end up spending ever more money on specific welfare benefits, for instance on EU‑wide social‑abuse programmes. Billions are being poured out, and that disadvantages us. We could better direct those funds to relieve working citizens”.
He noted that network tariffs have already been reduced and stated that “we should continue the reduction of network fees”.
