Sören Pellmann, the leader of the left-wing parliamentary group, opposed any German participation in securing the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to RTL and ntv, Pellmann stated that given the current climate, which includes the German federal government, a more restrained approach-especially concerning any military actions-would be most appropriate. He advised the federal government to exercise significant caution, prioritizing diplomatic efforts over displays of strength. According to the left-wing politician, involvement in such a security mission would be counterproductive, fueling escalation rather than de-escalation, and emphasized that Germany should not participate in any military safeguarding of the strait.
Furthermore, Pellmann demanded the closure of US airbases located in Germany. He questioned the actual value of these American bases to German security, noting that a recent notable event in the East Marsh area suggested that US air support was unnecessary for peace in Europe.
Regarding international stability, Pellmann dismissed the idea that Russian President Vladimir Putin would welcome a reduction in American influence. He cautioned against overestimating the threat of a “Russian takeover of Europe” arguing instead that it would be wiser for Germany and its European partners to discuss forming a peace alliance, advocating for further disarmament, and establishing a joint security framework. He concluded that, for these necessary steps, Donald Trump might not even be needed.
