The Left party has called on the federal government to implement stronger protections for queer individuals. This demand comes in light of the International Day against Homo-, Bi-, Inter-, and Trans-misophobia, which is being commemorated this Sunday.
Parliamentary Member Maik Brückner, the party’s spokesperson for queer policy, told the “Rheinische Post” that robust government support is urgently needed. He emphasized that as violent incidents and discrimination rise, and right-wing groups continue to fuel anti-queer sentiment, the government must actively position itself as a protective shield for the queer community.
Brückner criticized Minister Prien, particularly suggesting that her launch of the “Queer Life” action plan was merely a token, and pointed to potential dangers posed by Dobrindt’s reporting ordinance, which he claims could subject transgender individuals to constant forced outing. Furthermore, he stated that politicians such as Klöckner and his colleagues have failed to make the queer community feel truly supported.
Brückner concluded that the current government shares responsibility for the difficult situation, noting that there are numerous pressing concerns and the overall social atmosphere is becoming increasingly oppressive. The anniversary of the International Day against Homo-, Bi-, Inter-, and Trans-misophobia serves as a yearly reminder to strongly oppose any form of discrimination or exclusion based on sexual or gender identity.
