Lebanese Premier Bans Hezbollah Military Operations, Restricts Group To Political Role

The Lebanese government has declared the recent attacks by the Iran‑backed Hezbollah militia illegal. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced on Monday that Hezbollah’s military activities are banned and the group’s role will be confined to the political arena. He rejected any military or security operations carried out from Lebanese territory that lie outside the framework of legitimate institutions.

Salam added that all Hezbollah actions are unlawful and urged security forces to prevent any attacks launched from Lebanon. Simultaneously he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to end hostilities with Israel and to resume negotiations.

The ban follows Hezbollah’s first nighttime rocket attacks on Israel since the 2024 ceasefire; Israel responded with extensive airstrikes in Lebanon. The actual impact of the Lebanese government’s prohibition, particularly regarding enforcement, remains unclear.
