LDP Forecasts Majority in Upcoming Japanese Parliamentary Election

LDP Forecasts Majority in Upcoming Japanese Parliamentary Election

In Japan’s recent parliamentary election the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has reportedly secured a majority in the House of Representatives, according to early exit‑polls. Both NHK, the public‑broadcasting broadcaster, and the Kyodo news agency report that the LDP, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, is on track to win the lower house on its own.

The surveys, collected from voters in various polling stations, do not yet clarify whether the LDP can achieve a two‑thirds majority when combined with its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party (JIP). That outcome remains uncertain.

Previously, the coalition of the LDP and Komeito lost its long‑standing majority in the lower house during the 2024 election, and, after a defeat in the upper house as well, then‑Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba resigned in September 2025. Takaichi succeeded him, becoming Japan’s first female prime minister. Her approval ratings are noticeably higher than those of her predecessor, and she has hoped that the early elections would bring a decisive majority to the new administration.
