Lauterbach Rejects Privatizing Dental Costs Cites Need for Efficient Care

Former federal health minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) criticised a proposal by the CDU’s Economy Council that would require patients to pay for dental services directly, even if they are covered by statutory health insurance. “Our goal must be to provide necessary care more efficiently, not to privatise it” Lauterbach told the “Rheinische Post” on Tuesday. He warned that repeatedly unsettling the public with proposals for social retrenchment-without accompanying measures to spur economic growth-could even reinforce the AfD. The umbrella body of statutory health insurance (GKV) replied cautiously. “This proposal is one of many that outline how different actors envision a reform of statutory health insurance. Please understand that we will not comment further. We are instead looking forward to the first results of the Health Finance Commission, which are expected soon” a GKV spokesperson said.
