Facing poor opinion poll numbers for the coalition parties, CDU vice chair Karl-Josef Laumann is calling for increased unity and cohesion regarding upcoming reform initiatives. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Laumann stressed that the necessary work must now be done. He argued that if the reform concepts are finalized soon, they must be adopted unanimously, calling this the only way forward.
At the same time, the North Rhine-Westphalia social minister urged the parties to show a willingness to compromise on both sides. He suggested that the SPD must offer concessions, and conversely, the CDU must similarly be prepared to compromise. Laumann concluded by stating that he believes everyone involved understands that these difficult steps are unavoidable.
