Latvian Prime Minister Resigns Amid Ukrainian Drone Incident

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina has resigned following repeated incidents involving Ukrainian drones. The underlying issue stemmed from the infiltration of Latvian territory by drones, which were originally intended for Russia. This crisis followed Silina’s previous decision to fire Defense Minister Andris Spruds after a drone crash occurred in eastern Latvia.

The situation escalated when Spruds’s own party withdrew its support, leading to the collapse of Silina’s government coalition. Speaking in Riga on Thursday, Silina stated that political opportunists had chosen to capitalize on the crisis, despite a strong candidate being available for the position of Defense Minister. She concluded her address by announcing her resignation, while adding, “I resign, but I do not give up”.

In the wake of the collapse, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics announced that he would decide on the quickest way to establish a new government by Friday. Looking ahead, the next general parliamentary elections in Latvia are scheduled to take place in October.
