German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, a member of the Social Democratic Party, urged swift changes within the European Union after recent geopolitical turbulence. Speaking at a “Welt” event in Berlin on Tuesday, he declared that “now is the time for a two‑speed Europe” and called for the EU to build on its own strengths. He added that Germany, together with France and other partners, would now lead the effort to make Europe stronger and more independent.
Klingbeil announced that on Wednesday he would hold a video conference with his French, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Dutch counterparts. The meeting is intended to prepare for the EU Special Summit scheduled for February 12, where the focus will be on boosting competitiveness and defence capabilities. As one of the six largest economies in Europe, he said the group could become a driver of progress and highlighted a four‑point plan for the “Groupe E6” that includes advancing the Capital Markets Union, strengthening the euro, better coordinating defence investments, and securing raw materials.
