Juso chief Philipp Türmer appealed for a tougher stance from Europe in response to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to Washington. In a guest column for the “Frankfurter Rundschau”, Türmer urged the European Commission and national leaders to “fight fire with fire” against the United States and its ultra‑wealthy allies. He argued that whenever the U.S. threatens economic disadvantages, Europe can respond by turning to secure, open‑source alternatives for many American‑made software products, urging German authorities to move quickly to these options. Türmer also called for the European Digital Services Act to impose hefty fines on U.S. social‑media giants, contending that such sanctions could inflict “billions‑of‑dollars’ worth of wealth losses on mega‑billionaires” like Elon Musk.
