Following a recent arson attack targeting the property of Andreas Büttner, the Brandenburg Commissioner for Anti-Semitism, Büttner has received strong support from various Jewish communities. The Brandenburg State Association of Jewish Communities issued a statement declaring its “unreserved” backing of Büttner, insisting that he continue his official duties. According to the “Welt”, the association emphasized that they are “completely and totally” behind him, describing him as a reliable, courageous, and highly dedicated partner in the fight against anti-Semitism. They noted that the arson attack was perceived as a direct assault on him and his work, assuring that Büttner enjoys complete trust and backing. Consequently, the communities called upon politicians and the wider public for support during this challenging time.
The incident began in early January when an outbuilding on Büttner’s property in Templin burned down. Compounding the attack, the symbol of Hamas was sprayed on his front door, and Büttner subsequently received a letter containing insults and threats. The Public Prosecutor’s Office immediately took over the investigation.
The investigation is centered on two men, both aged 25, who are reportedly connected to Büttner’s social circle. These men are currently considered suspects and are being investigated for multiple charges, including arson, property damage, and threats. According to investigators, there are personal and professional connections between Büttner and the accused individuals, and Büttner himself is serving as a key witness in the case.
