Jens Spahn Praises Merz‑Led Gains Urges Optimism at Stuttgart CDU Party Conference

At the CDU federal convention in Stuttgart, deputy chair Jens Spahn praised what he called the government’s achievements under Chancellor Friedrich Merz. He said Germany is once again taking a leading role in Europe and that Merz is the only European politician able to negotiate “on equal footing” with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Spahn criticized the former foreign‑policy stance of the “traffic‑light” coalition and lauded the new direction that places Germany’s interests at the center. In defence policy, he stated the government has launched a “policy change”: the Bundeswehr will receive the necessary resources, and he referenced reforms to conscription.

Regarding internal security, he highlighted a number of measures, including expanded powers for the federal police and new initiatives against domestic violence.

He also highlighted gains in migration policy: migrant arrivals have fallen by 60 percent and a European concept of “safe third countries” has been adopted. The CDU will, according to Spahn, continue to work decisively on this issue to strengthen the “democratic centre”.

Finally, he commented on the economy, arguing that lowering labour costs and boosting productivity are essential for fostering growth.
