According to early projections, Japan’s ruling LDP has won a majority in the House of Representatives in the recent parliamentary election.
NHK, the public broadcaster, reports that the party led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will secure the majority on its own, and the same finding is echoed by the Kyodo news agency. These figures come from post‑election surveys conducted at polling stations. Whether the LDP’s gain, combined with its coalition partner JIP, will provide a two‑thirds majority remains unclear.
In the previous election in 2024, the then‑government coalition of the LDP and Komeito lost its majority in the lower house. After a defeat in the upper house as well, former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba resigned in September 2025. He was succeeded by Sanae Takaichi, who became Japan’s first female prime minister. Her approval ratings are noticeably higher than her predecessor’s, and she hoped that the early elections would produce clear majorities in Parliament.
