Early projections indicate that the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has secured a majority in Japan’s House of Representatives. According to exit polls by the public broadcaster NHK, LDP leader Sanae Takaichi’s party will hold the lower house on its own, a finding that the news agency Kyodo also reports. These figures are drawn from post‑voting surveys conducted at polling stations. It remains uncertain whether, when combined with the coalition partner JIP, the LDP will achieve a two‑thirds majority.
In the 2024 election the LDP‑Komeito coalition lost its long‑standing majority in the lower house. After defeats in both houses, former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba resigned in September 2025. He was succeeded by Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister. Her approval ratings are markedly higher than those of her predecessor, and the early elections she convened were intended to secure a clear parliamentary majority.
