A bombing at a mosque in Islamabad killed at least 31 people.
The explosion took place during Friday prayers at the Khadijatul‑Kubra Mosque in the Tarlai Kalan neighbourhood. More than 169 people were injured, putting Islamabad’s hospitals into an emergency state.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack and expressed deep sympathy for the victims. Police believe a suicide bomber was stopped at the mosque’s entrance; eyewitnesses reported gunfire between the assailants and the mosque’s security forces before the explosive device detonated.
Security forces secured the area and launched an investigation. President Asif Ali Zardari described the incident as a crime against humanity. In response, the government placed all hospitals in Islamabad and Rawalpindi on high alert to treat the injured.
