The escalating unrest in Iran is prompting speculation about potential intervention from the United States and Israel, according to German Foreign Policy expert Peter Beyer of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). In an interview with the “Rheinische Post”, Beyer indicated that discussions between the leaderships of both nations regarding a possible response are already underway.
Beyer suggested a “focused approach” is the most probable scenario, tempering expectations of a swift resolution to the ongoing protests. His assessment signals a growing divergence from the traditionally cautious stance favored by some European capitals.
The CDU politician sharply criticized the current level of engagement from the German government, asserting that mere expressions of sympathy are insufficient to support the Iranian protesters. He urged Berlin to assume a leading role in shaping European policy on Iran, moving beyond symbolic gestures.
“Warm words alone will not help the protestors in Iran” Beyer stated, adding a call for the immediate designation of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization. He further demanded stricter enforcement of existing sanctions, alleging that loopholes are being exploited for profit, undermining their intended effect. Beyer’s comments reflect a rising sentiment within some German political circles that a more assertive stance is required to address the evolving crisis and signal a clear commitment to supporting a potential shift in power within Iran. The prospect of US and Israeli involvement, while potentially escalating regional tensions, also raises complex questions about the appropriate level of intervention in Iranian internal affairs and the potential for unintended consequences.
