Security expert Peter Neumann warns that global economic fallout could follow if the conflict escalates after Iran blocks the Strait of Hormuz for international shipping.
He told the “Rheinische Post” from King’s College London, “If the Houthi rebels-who are funded by Iran-join in and block the Suez Canal, that could spark a worldwide economic crisis”. His comments are also being used by the German government to underscore the danger.
Neumann says the economic threat is part of Iran’s strategy: “Iran is militarily disadvantaged, but it is effectively deploying its few economic weapons”.
